Bucky Pit Project Plan Bundle | Octagonal Steel Fire Pit Metal Fabrication Project
Challenge your students with this Bucky Pit Project Plan Bundle, an intermediate-to-advanced metal fabrication project built around a multi-layer octagonal steel fire pit. This project includes a central steel pit body, upper 8-sided rail, lower 8-sided outer ring, angled steel connectors, and four angled legs with foot pads.
Designed for Agricultural Mechanics, Welding, Metal Fabrication, CTE, and high school shop programs, this project gives students hands-on practice with complex layout, angled tube cutting, geometric fit-up, MIG welding, grinding, and distortion control.

Project Skills Covered
Students will practice:
- Reading multi-sheet fabrication drawings
- Cutting multiple angled tube components
- Working with angled cuts
- Building symmetrical octagonal structures
- Fitting upper and lower rail assemblies
- MIG welding and heat control
- Grinding, alignment, and distortion correction
- Finishing a functional outdoor metal project
Materials Used
This project uses 2" × 2" × 14ga square tubing, steel plate for the pit body, and steel plate for the foot pads. The project instructions list approximately 20 feet of 2" × 2" tubing, 1800 square inches of 3/16" or 1/8" steel plate, and additional steel plate for the feet.
Drawing Details
The included drawing packet shows the full octagonal pit assembly, parts list, upper rail, outer ring supports, outer ring layout, legs, foot plates, and bottom view spacing. The plans include key dimensions such as upper rail cuts, outer ring layout, legs, 3" × 3" foot pads, and bottom view spacing references.
Perfect For
This project is ideal for instructors who want a more advanced shop build that pushes students beyond basic welding practice. The Bucky Pit requires precision, planning, fit-up, symmetry, and strong welding technique, making it a great project for advanced welding students, ag mechanics classes, fabrication units, or capstone-style shop projects.
