3' Hexagon Steel Fire Pit Project Plan Bundle | Metal Fabrication Shop Project
Build advanced fabrication skills with this 3' Hexagon Steel Fire Pit Project Plan Bundle. This project guides students through constructing a heavy-duty six-sided steel fire pit using CNC-cut sheet steel, press brake bends, angled legs, tubing supports, and a 1" angle iron top ring. It is designed for Agricultural Mechanics, Welding, Metal Fabrication, CTE, and high school shop programs.
This is an intermediate to advanced project with an estimated build time of 2–4 class periods, or approximately 150–300 minutes, depending on equipment access and student experience.

Project Skills Covered
Students will practice:
- CNC plasma cutting flat patterns
- Reading multi-sheet fabrication drawings
- Interpreting bend tables
- Bending sheet steel to form a six-sided pit body
- Cutting angled legs and top ring pieces
- Fitting symmetrical leg placement using layout offsets
- MIG tack welding and fillet welding
- Grinding, finishing, and quality checking a completed metal project
Materials Used
This project uses sheet steel for the pit body, upper plate, and foot plates; 1" × 1" angle iron for the hexagon top ring; 1" × 1" square tubing for top supports; and 2" × 2" square tubing for the legs. The pit body flat pattern is designed for CNC cutting and is approximately 43" × 43", with 3/16" plate recommended.
Drawing Details
The included drawing packet shows the full hexagon fire pit layout, including leg placement, expanded or sheet steel insert, 1" angle iron top ring, foot plates, legs, top supports, pit body dimensions, and the flat pattern bend table. The bend table calls for six 90° upward bends to form the pit body.
Perfect For
This project is ideal for instructors looking for a more advanced shop build that challenges students with CNC layout, bending, angled fit-up, symmetrical assembly, and welded fabrication. The finished project is a functional outdoor fire pit students can be proud to build.
